GREATER SOUTHWEST MUSIC FESTIVAL HISTORY

The Greater Southwest Music Festival, Inc. was founded as a non-profit organization in 1969 by a group of local businessmen, musicians, educators, and other professional men and women. The purpose was to promote the educational and cultural aspects of fine arts among young people in middle and high schools in the northwest Texas area and surrounding states. The first festival was held in 1971 and has been ongoing annually since that time except in 2009 when the festival was cancelled due to the H1N1 flu pandemic. The festival continues to operate as an incentive for public interest and encouragement of music excellence in education.

The Festival annually welcomes students from Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Kansas. In recent years students from 60 schools in 40 cities have resulted in average entries of 64 choirs, 105 bands and orchestras, 18 show choirs and jazz bands and 1,250 solos and ensembles. These entries account for student participation of 8,832 annually.

While in Amarillo, students, directors and sponsors have an opportunity to visit the Wonderland Amusement Park, Palo Duro Canyon, The American Quarter Horse Association and other area attractions.

We welcome you to Amarillo and hope you have a pleasant and successful experience. Please contact us if we can do anything to make your visit more enjoyable.
